Oilseed Extrusion

	Oilseeds Using extrusion technology to process soybeans, peanuts, cottonseed, sunflower and other specialty oilseed crops is a relatively new idea, but one that has great promise because it allows you to use all parts of the crop. The seeds themselves can be separated from the oil and used for animal feed, while the oil is used in human food products. The process requires no solvents or chemicals, and generates insignificant amounts of waste.

	Full Fat Soy Before the oil is extracted from soybeans, they are known as full fat soybeans. With the right processing, full fat soybeans can be used efficiently and profitably as animal feed. If properly processed, full fat soybeans can be efficiently and profitably used in animal feeding. Without that processing, full fat soybeans may, in fact, be harmful. To reach their full nutritional potential, soybeans must be treated with heat. Extrusion processing can provide the heat needed to enhance full fat soybeans' nutritional value.

	Oilseed for Food and Feed The potential use of oilseeds in food and feed is limited by the wide range of potentially harmful anti-nutritional or toxic compounds they contain. Few of these compounds can be inactivated by heat treatment, and an effective method of treating them is essential before these oilseeds can realize their full potential in feed and food. This is where extrusion processing comes in. When used with appropriate additives, extrusion is effective in destroying these compounds.

	Gin Trash Similarly, gin trash, a by-product of ginning cotton, would have great potential for cattle feed -- except for the potentially dangerous pesticides it contains. Extrusion is one effective way to reduce or destroy these compounds.

	Production of Low-Fat Ingredients Most crops can be used for food and feed purposes. One limitation, however, is the amount of oil these crops contain, which makes it difficult to use them in food formulations. Extrusion-expelling technology can process these crops into low-fat ingredients, which can be used in a variety of food and feed applications.
